Charli XCX gave a suprise concert at Times Square yesterday. The mediatised documentation of the event on digital platforms shows people with smartphones panning left to right and up and down from here to there to somehow capture that what is happening in its entirety.
To some it may just be another publicity stunt at a place well known for publicity on screens. But right here on Times Square where we could witness the transition from poster art to screens we can now witness the current status quo of the online-offline nexus 2024. A term used to describe the fusion of online and offline dimensions of social life in actual practice where digital technologies have acquired substantial and irreplacable functions in organizing everyday "offline" practices, and vice versa - a state of affairs sometimes referred to as "post-digital". Offline and online dimensions of life have been thoroughly integrated into one new and complex context for social life.
The multitude of screens on all sides, in all forms and sizes and the people behind screens, in front of screens, on and inbetween screens merged inseparability. The actual human performer as little dot on a balcony ensures a glimpse of realness, that is instantly projected, instantly filmed and instantly published and instantly woven into cultural engagement engines. You were there or you were not, at least you got the vibe until the glitch. A metaphor perfectly suited for this transitional post-election pre-oath period. Here is a thread including videos.
